Mill won't be built: rally told

21 Mar, 2011 07:17 AM
THE GUNNS pulp mill will not be built, claim protesters in their latest rally against the $2.3 billion project.

More than 1000 anti-mill protesters heard the continuing theme from prominent speakers before marching across the Batman Bridge yesterday.

Tasmanian-born author Richard Flanagan said yesterday's turnout indicated public opposition to the mill was stronger than ever.

"The lesson of history is that, ultimately, you have to have the consent of the people, and Gunns do not have that consent," Flanagan said.

Former television presenter Peter Cundall was adamant that similar protests would continue until the mill was stopped. "We are going to beat this mill, make no mistake about it," Mr Cundall told the crowd.

Meanwhile, forest industry representatives say they respect the right of people to protest.

Timber Communities Australia state manager Barry Chipman said: "Those people have their right to have their say, but from Timber Communities Australia point of view, there are many thousands of people who want to see the pulp mill built, and are looking forward to that taking place."

I love how Richard Flanagan is referred to as "Tasmanian-born". Of course, most of the Greens and anti-mill figureheads aren't. McKim and Cundall are english-born, Brown, Putt and Booth are from NSW, O'Conner's from the ACT, Morris is from Victoria. Isn't there anything going on in those states these days? So we've got an alleged 1000 people listening to a bunch of mainlanders. On a bridge. Wow....

I own a property at Beauty Point and I could think only of myself and join the protesters. The thing is that this is a large project and good for the Tasmanian economy. It will keep young people employed instead of them leaving the state to find a good decent and steady job elsewhere. The protesters will never be satisfied, not ever. Guarantee no native forest is logged and use the re-newable resources Tasmania has to sustain a viable industry.

The distorted views of the anti mill proponents is mind blowing.

If Gunn's are able to get the financial backing they require, then the mill WILL go ahead.

And if the Green's and anti mill protesters break the laws then they should be dealt with appropriately, not, as we have seen in the past, given a slap on the wrist and let go to repeat the same offences again.

As for some of these protesters are they on the dole? and if so they should have it withdrawn.

Let the protests continue. Our politicians are very slow learners.

about 500 at the protest absolutely no more listening to the diatribe of a few who like to over-exaggerate their claims as to what this mill will do to the tamar valley.we heard from a representative of t.a.p. that houses cannot be sold in rowella due to the mill being built ,one may also think that people in rowella dont want to sell because they like it there. t.a.p.also states that this mill will be responsible for 2% of all carbon emissions in aus when operating. right, and we all still beleive in the tooth fairy.why dont this mob of anti-everythings protest about something that really affects the tamar valley and do something about the tamar river basin with its mud banks that smell more than any pulp mill effluent ever will do.

Its funny all these tree huggers holding up signs and reading their speeches and all I see is wooden pickets and nice clean white paper no recycled paper in the photos shown in the gallery for this. How can they hold there heads high and protest against jobs for tasmanians.

As a resident of Launceston who enjoys breathing (reasonably) clean air I will continue to oppose this non compliant mill. I am amazed that so many people are gullible enough to still believe anything Gunns or Lara Lennon has to say on the matter. If Gunns (or their administrators) ever get around to trying to build this thing they are going to face an uphill battle from many, many people who will do anything they can (including getting arrested en mass) to stop it. For Tasmanian taxpayers to be expected to underwrite such a ill conceived non compliant project so one company (whoever it turns out to be) and a couple of hundred (at most) otherwise unemployable people can be employed is totally unacceptable. I should also add that I am nowhere near retirement age, I wash, I have my own business, and I pay taxes.
