GUNNS Ltd chairman John Gay has announced that he has retired from the board of the timber company, as well as the corporation he set up to oversee the proposed Tamar Valley pulp mill.

In an announcement to the Australian Stock Exchange this afternoon, Mr Gay said his retirement was effective immediately.
Mr Gay started his career with Gunns in 1973, was appointed general manager in 1982, managing director in 1986 and chairman in 2002.
In the statement, the board and management of the company thanked Mr Gay "for his many years of dedication and commitment to Gunns and his substantial contribution over that time".
Chris Newman will replace Mr Gay as chairman of Gunns Ltd and Southern Star Corporation, with David Simmons as deputy chairman.
Mr Newman was appointed a director of Gunns in 2001.
He is also a director of Austereo Ltd, Worldwide Entertainment Ltd and Webjet Ltd.
Mr Simmons was appointed a director of Gunns Ltd in 2009.
he is also a director of Codan Ltd and was previously managing director of Hills Industries for 16 years.
