Gay on federal pulp and paper review panel

Gay on federal pulp and paper review panel

19 Jun, 2009 11:10 AM
GUNNS Ltd executive chairman John Gay has been named on a Federal Government strategy panel that will undertake a comprehensive review of Australia's pulp and paper industry.

Innovation and Industry Minister Senator Kim Carr announced the formation of the Pulp and Paper Industry Strategy Group this morning. It is to report back to him by November.

Senator Carr said in a media statement that the group would undertake a review of the industry and develop a plan to encourage innovation and attract investment in pulp and paper manufacturing in Australia.

He said members of the strategy group would include senior representatives from the leading pulp and paper companies, unions, and all levels of government.

The group will be overseen by Jim Henneberry, general manager of Australian Paper and Mr Michael O'Connor, the national assistant secretary of the CFMEU's Forestry and Furnishing Products Division.

Gunns is currently trying to put a finance package together for its controversial $2.2 billion Bell Bay pulp mill proposal.

Jon Ryder, general manager of PaperlinX's printing and publications division, is also on the panel. PaperlinX is currently trying to sell its Burnie and Wesley Vale mills,

The pulp and paper manufacturing sector employs some 19,000 people and contributes around $1.3 billion a year to the Australian economy, Senator Carr said.

"It is an important industry, particularly in regional areas, so it is vital we get the balance right between environmental concerns and economic activity in order to take Australia forward on a sustainable basis.

"The industry is undergoing a period of rationalisation, particularly in meeting the challenges of the current global recession.

"We need a full and frank assessment of the challenges and opportunities facing the sector, which is what this Review will provide.

"Industry and Government need to work together to create an operating environment where it makes good business sense for international firms to invest in Australia.

"Innovation and investment are the keys to achieving a world-class pulp and paper industry," he said.

The strategy group will be chaired by Stephen Payne, who is head of the manufacturing division in the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, with Mr Henneberry and Mr O'Connor as deputy co-chairs.

Mmmmm, interesting for a man that doesn't know too much about the pulp and paper making industry!!! And the review panel is extremely one-sided!!! It looks to me that an industry is getting together to reinforce their views onto us Australians and have us fear Australia's economic future without them! We have climate change in the making!!! I would have thought that we would be finding better ways to reduce our CO2 polluting, not further exacerbate it! We all need to reduce our reliance on paper products, not have an industry tell us that they are going to make more for us, and in the process destroy the last bits of native forests we have left in Australia, but especially here in Tasmania!!!

If Kim Carr was serious about 'getting the balance right' he would have representatives of the courageous Australians trying to save the highest carbon storing forests on earth. One thing is for sure, the license to destroy these forest has been withdrawn forever. It looks like the same old jaded bunch of vested interests, busily working-out how to profit from the extinction of the Tasmanian Devil.

It just shows how stacked and in who's favour the 'Review Panel' will be doesn't it? It also shows how few people are actually employed in this destructive industry and how little the return in dollar terms for the destruction it delivers.

There are so many foxes in this hen house that the chooks have already disappeared.

Having seen the poverty of mental agilty/acumen demonstrated by Mr Gay at Gunns LTD AGMs I can only imagine his main role on the review panel will be to make tea and go out for takeaways. I also must agree with Henk in wondering exactly what experience Mr Gay has of pulp and paper manufacturing as he is yet to manage to build for his company (or shareholders) an actually real-life mill. He is however quite expert at wasting vast mountains of money so perhaps his new role in government my prove a boon to all parties.

Pats on the back all round to the tired old hacks of the Tasmanian Times self appreciation society. What we really need is a member of the Wilderness Society to nominate themselves for membership of the Panel. It would then become a question of choice between foxes in the hen house or lunatics in the asylum
