Exports to take off after air freight expansion

03 Feb, 2012 07:03 AM
PREMIER Lara Giddings was at Launceston Airport yesterday to open the redeveloped Australian Air Express freight terminal.

The $1.5 million redevelopment allowed the company to move from its previous hangar, built more than 50 years ago, and increase its freight capacity.

Ms Giddings said it meant Tasmania would be able to export more products and produce.

``It's an exciting day and, in fact, one that gives me a lot of confidence for the future of this state and particularly being able to make the most of our investment in irrigation projects, which will see more food product being produced,'' Ms Giddings said.

She said the redevelopment would also see more jobs supported and created in Tasmania.

``Here on this site there are 27 jobs already with Air Express and we would hope to see those jobs continue to expand,'' she said.

``There's talk that those jobs may triple as capacity of this site is taken up and used.''

Launceston Airport chairman Chris Woodruff said they were also upgrading the freight apron to further support Northern Tasmania's air freight capacity.

``At an approximate cost of $6 million, this project is one of Launceston Airport's largest infrastructure investments,'' he said.

Tenders for the apron works are under review, with works scheduled to start later this month.
