Paralympian forced to crawl through airport

24 Nov, 2009 10:12 AM
JETSTAR has apologised to Paralympian Kurt Fearnley after he slammed the airline for forcing him check his personal wheelchair in with his luggage.

Mr Fearnley, who had just returned from crawling the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea said he chose to crawl through Brisbane Airport rather than use an unsuitable chair offered by airline staff.

He told the Newcastle Herald this morning he hoped the incident would change company policy on dealing with the disabled.

"The one thing, I'm hoping is that they [Jetstar] come out of this and create an improved disability service," he said.

"This is not something that has only happened to me - but to others, others who did not turn around and say 'I'm not going to be treated like a child, I'm not going to take this.'

"They've already apologised, but now I just hope they work out a better policy."

The incident occurred as Mr Fearnley was returning from his trek along Kokoda.

Jetstar does not support people with disabilities well at all. I try to avoid flying with them as they usually just wheel my daughter to her next lounge, take off with the wheel chair and leave us there stranded. If my daughter needs to go to the toilet we have no way of getting her there. Last time I just spoke very loudly that I would gladly give them their wheelchair back if they did not discriminate against her and got her own frame for her from the plane. I should not have to embarrass my daughter like this to ensure she is treated with respect. Pick your act up Jetstar before somebody sues you for discrimination.

He was not forced to crawl through the airport. He was offered another wheelchair and he refused it. It was then his choice to crawl. This is standard airline policy, not just Jetstar.

I read this paper from the UK and here this approach would now, thankfully, be a scandal, even for mass transit (trains and tubes). Court cases have moved the disability provisions properly forward- but we and the EU are still behind the USA where I frequently travel. We are all one world and need to deal with each other in the way we would like to be treated ourselves. Good on Kurt- and it is people like him who help us all advance support services.

Jetstar sucks. I don't care how 'cheap' they are. They make the other airlines look like first class by comparison. Chuck in the extra bucks and get treated properly - somewhere else.
