Centre now a reality for community - Child and Family Centre Ravenswood

22 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
Support and services are close at hand for families at Ravenswood.

In January, the Child and Family Centre Ravenswood opened for business, connecting families with children from zero to five with early learning support, health and well-being information and services.

On Friday, the centre will be officially opened by Children's Minister Michelle O'Byrne.

Centre leader Judy Terry said it had been a three-year journey to open the centre, which is complete with a play area, kitchen and meeting rooms.

"It (the child and family centre) is a state government initiative and we fall under the Department of Education," she said.

"The community had a large say in establishing the child and family centre and also in the design of the building with the architects.

"So all along the way the choices were made by the community."

The centre aims to connect families with support and services in the community that are accessible.

This includes working closely with the the local health centre and the Ravenswood Neighbourhood House so that all services can work in a collaborative way.

"Research has shown that the early years are profoundly important and it becomes increasingly difficult to change the life course of children as they grow older," Mrs Terry said.

"A mix of services at each child and family centre depends on the community and the community's requests.

"Instead of service providers saying what they can deliver, we actually ask the families what it is that needs to be delivered to meet their fundamental needs.

"Then we work towards bringing those service providers into the child and family centre to offer the support to the families in their own community, on their own patch, so they don't have to go out to access any of those services.

"For example, we could have financial counselling here if that is required by a family, we could have housing here if that is what a family requires."

A child health nurse also delivers services from the centre, as does an occupational therapist and a midwife.

There is a paid childcare centre on-site - Children's Playhouse - which is run by City Mission.

Programs held at the Child and Family Centre Ravenswood are free of charge.

"Everything at the child and family centre is done in a very collaborative way with both services and the community, so it really is a new way of doing things instead of the top down telling people what they are going to do and servicing them," Mrs Terry said.

"It is about people and families telling us what they want, what they need, what will make a difference in their life."
